Overview
A long, classic desert singletrack descent from the La Sal plateau into the canyon country — exposed, rocky and fast in parts with outstanding views.
Porcupine Rim drops off the La Sal plateau and descends through a variety of terrain — open slickrock slabs, exposed singletrack, steep and rocky pitches, and fast canyon-top sections with big views over the Colorado River and surrounding mesas. The trail is long and committing; many riders shuttle to the top or combine it with other loop options. Weather and heat are important factors in Moab, and water/repair kit are essential.
Trail Features
- Long sustained descent with technical rock gardens and slab sections
- Exposed sections with great views — route-finding can be required in places
- Patches of loose desert soil and occasional steep drops
- Point-to-point: common to shuttle or arrange a one-way ride
Technical Breakdown
- Best for full-suspension bikes with ~130–160mm travel for balance of pedaling and descending
- Recommended skill: Advanced to Expert — confident on rock, slab and exposed terrain
- Be prepared for sustained technical riding and limited bailout opportunities
Access & Logistics
- Access: Typical starts on the La Sal loop / Porcupine Rim trailhead; many riders shuttle from Moab
- Parking: Trailhead parking limited; if shuttling, arrange permits or commercial shuttle as needed
- Season: Spring–Fall preferred; avoid extreme summer heat and thunderstorms
When to Ride
Spring and fall offer the best temperatures. Summer can be very hot — start early and carry ample water. Winter can bring snow at higher elevations and make the route more challenging or impassable.
Safety & Trail Etiquette
- Yield appropriately on narrow singletrack; be visible on exposed slabs and lookout for hikers.
- Carry extra water, a multi-tool, spare tube/CO2 and first aid — desert rescues can be remote.
- Park respectfully and follow local land-use rules; avoid riding closed sections after storms.
